Parents don't like to see their children struggle. They feel the pain of kids who are unhappy when they can't work out a math problem. And they don't like to see kids bleary-eyed late at night, trying to finish a science project. It's natural for parents to want to help. But how can parents help kids realize the value of the homework?"The most important thing to remeber about homework,"says Richard Bavaria,an official at Sylvan Learning Centers,"is that it should consolidate what they've learned in class. Showing them how to research the answer is best;doing the homework for them is bad."Here are some suggestions for parents from the experts:
Create an environment that is good for doing homework.Children should have a designated room that is clean and has the things they'll need.
Keep in touch with teachers to know the amount of the homework.Regular communication between parents and teachers can keep everyone on the right path.
Encourage kids to divide the homework into two kinds. The first kind is that kids can finish it on their own and the second is that kids can finish it with come help.Parents should only help kids with second kind, such as dictation.
Tell kids they can't watch TV or play until they finish their homework.
Parents should praise kids if they do a good job
On the other hand,if a child complains about too much homework,or if it's taking too long to finish it,it's fair for the parents to talk about the problem with the teacher."Kids do need some free time and rest time. They need physical activity and to eat dinner,"Bavaria says.
