Lu Xun, whose pen name was chosen to be Zhou Shuren (September 25, 1881 – October 19, 1936), is recognized as one of the preeminent Chinese writers of the 20th century. He is often hailed as the architect of modern Chinese literature, having primarily written in baihua (白话), the vernacular Chinese language, as well as in classical Chinese. Lu Xun was not only a master of the short story but also an editor, translator, critic, essayist, and poet. During the 1930s, he assumed a leadership role in the Chinese League of Left-Wing Writers based in Shanghai. His literary contributions have had a profound and lasting impact since the May Fourth Movement, and he was subsequently venerated by the Communist regime after 1949. Mao Zedong, the paramount leader of China, was himself a lifelong admirer of Lu Xun's works. Despite sharing the Left's ideals, Lu Xun never actually became a member of the Chinese Communist Party. Lu Xun's works have been introduced to English-speaking audiences through numerous translations, with "Selected Stories of Lu Hsun" by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang being particularly well-known.
