Hanfu, the traditional attire of the Han Chinese, the majority ethnic group in China, is a profound cultural symbol with a history of nearly 4,000 years, almost as old as Chinese civilization itself. However, during the Qing Dynasty, when the Manchu minority ruled China for approximately 300 years, the wearing of Hanfu was banned and replaced by Manchu attire, now commonly known as the Qipao. Our aim is to revive and promote Hanfu, bringing it back into public consciousness.
Hanfu is characterized by the right side being wrapped over the left, creating a unique silhouette. It encompasses both casual and formal wear. Casual garments include the Shenyi, a long, full-body robe, and the Ruqun, a top with a separate skirt. Formal attire ranges from the Xuanduan, a dark, dignified robe often worn in rituals and state occasions, to the Yuanlin Shan, a closed, round-collared robe suitable for official or academic events.
Chinese civilization, often referred to as "Hua Xia," is a testament to the beauty of dress and decoration, represented by Hanfu, and the grandeur of rituals and social conduct symbolized by "Xia." Many traditional East Asian garments, such as the Japanese kimono and the Korean hanbok, share similarities with Hanfu, reflecting the historical influence of Chinese culture on neighboring nations.
