ISO 7027:2016 Water quality -- Determination of turbidity
1 Scope
This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the turbidity of water. The method is applicable to:
a) the measurement of the turbidity of raw water,
b) the measurement of the turbidity of treated water,
c) the measurement of the turbidity of settled water,
d) the measurement of the suspended solids content of a water sample.
The method is applicable to the turbidity range from 0,1 NTU to 1 000 NTU, and may be used outside this range provided that the limitations are understood.
2 Normative references
The following documents, in whole or in part, are normatively referenced in this document and are indispensable for its application. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

3 Principle
A light beam is passed through a water sample and the amount of light scattered at right angles to the direction of the beam is measured. The turbidity of the water is determined from the scattering caused by particles suspended in the water.
4 Reagents
4.1 Water, complying with the requirements of grade 3 of ISO 3696.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Turbidimeter, consisting of a light source, a receiver, a measuring cell and an indicating or recording device.
6 Sampling
Sampling shall be carried out in accordance with ISO 5667-1.
7 Procedure
7.1 Calibration of the instrument
The turbidimeter shall be calibrated in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
7.2 Determination
The water sample shall be poured into the measuring cell of the turbidimeter and the turbidity determined in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
8 Expression of results
The turbidity shall be expressed in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU).
9 Precision
Precision data are given in Annex A.
10 Test report
The test report shall include the following information:
a) a reference to this International Standard;
b) details of any departures from the standard method;
c) the date of the test;
d) the identity of the sample and any information relevant to its treatment;
e) the results obtained, including any information necessary for the expression of uncertainty;
f) any unusual features of the test.
