Noah Webster is best known for his American Dictionary of the English Language . The reason why he wrote this American dictionary was that in British English the spelling of words does not always represent the sound. Therefore, Webster wanted to write an American dictionary to simplify the spelling of English and make it look different from British English. In the dictionary , which first appeared in 1828 , Webster introduced lots of new American words , with information about their pronunciation and use , and the new spelling . Although the British criticized the dictionary , it quickly became a standard reference book in the States and today it is still the number one dictionary for American students .
