The Gift of the Nile
The Nile is about 6,670 kilometers in length and it is the longest river in the world.The ancient Egyptians lived and farmed along the Nile,using their animals.
On the northern edge off the Lake Victoria,Africa’s biggest lake,water pours over a waterfall into a narrow opening which some people believe is the beginning of the Nile.
Flooding is a disaster or most people,but ancient Egyptians didn’t think so.That’sbecause they could only grow crops in the thick mud left behing when the Nile flooded..Thw ancient Eygptians called the rich soil the Gift of the Nile.So they all had fields along the Nile.
The Aswan High Dam was built in 1970 to help prevent flooding of the Nile by collecting water in Lake Nasser,the largest man-made lake in the world.Unfortunately this dam caused a big change to the lives of farmers in Egypt.Then things went from bad to worse.Years of low level water eventually caused amines and drought.
Thanks to the Nile these Egyptians had fresh water for drinking and bathing.Without the Nile,Egypt would be a giant desert indeed.
