During the Three Kingdoms Period, Cao Cao led the army to conquer the Eastern Wu Dynasty. Sun Quan and Liu Bei jointly fought against Cao.

Sun Quan had a general named Zhou Yu, who was both wise and brave, but narrow-minded and jealous of Zhuge Liang's ability.

Because of the need for arrows in water warfare, Zhou Yu asked Zhuge Liang to be responsible for the construction of 100,000 arrows in 10 days.

Who knows that Zhuge Liang only needs three days, and is willing to make a military order, and he will be punished if he fails to complete his task. Zhou Yu thought that it was impossible to build 100,000 arrows in three days.

He just took advantage of this opportunity to eliminate Zhuge Liang. On the one hand, he told the military craftsmen not to prepare all the materials for making arrows. On the other hand, he asked the minister Lu Su to explore Zhuge Liang's falsehood.

Lu Su met Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang said, "Please help me with this matter. I hope you can lend me 20 boats, 30 sergeants on each boat.

The boat should be covered with green cloth slower son, and more than 1,000 straw handles will be arranged on both sides of the boat. However, this matter must not let Zhou Yu know.

Lu Su agreed and prepared everything according to Zhuge Liang's request. Two days passed, and there was no movement.

On the third day, at the fourth turn, Zhuge Liang secretly invited Lu Su to go aboard the ship, saying that they would go to fetch arrows together. Lu Su wondered.

Zhuge Liang ordered the ship to be roped up and driven across the bank. The river was foggy that day, and no one was visible across the river.

When the boat approached the water village of Cao Jun, Zhuge Liang ordered the boat to open and call the soldiers to drum and shout.

Cao Cao thought that the other side was attacking, and because he was afraid of ambushing in the fog, he sent 6,000 archers to shoot arrows into the river, and raindrops of arrows were shooting on grass handles.

After a while, Zhuge Liang ordered the boat to turn around and let the other side suffer arrows.

When the sun came out and the fog was about to disperse, Zhuge Liang made the boat hurry back.

At that time, the grass handles on both sides of the boat were densely filled with arrows, and there were at least five or six thousand arrows on each boat, totaling more than 100,000 arrows.

When Lu Su told Zhou Yu about the experience of borrowing arrows, Zhou Yu sighed and said, "Zhuge Liang's magic tricks are better than him."

Zhou Yu noticed Zhuge Liang was very capable and he was jealous.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One day, Zhou Yu asked Zhuge Liang to come and discuss military affairs.
Zhou said: “We are going to engage in battle with Cao’s army.
What is the best weapon to use for combating in water?”
Zhuge said: “Bows and arrows are the best.”
Zhou said: “Yes, you and I think alike.
Now our army is short in arrows.
I wish to ask you in taking care of producing one-hundred-thousand arrows in a rush.
This is an official matter and I hope you would not decline.”
Zhuge said: “Governor entrusts me with this assignment and of course I will do as you order.
I wonder when you will require these one-hundred-thousand arrows available for use.”
Zhou asked: “Could you produce them in ten days?”
Zhuge said: “Since we are going to engage in battle, making them in ten days could bungle up matters.”
Zhou asked: “How many days do you expect to get them made?”
Zhuge said: “Three days will be enough.”
Zhou said: “Military business is critically urgent and you cannot treat it as a joke.”
Zhuge said: “How could I dare to pull a prank on you, Governor?
I am willing to subject myself to a military order.
If I cannot finish the job in three days, I will gladly accept punishment that I deserve.”
Zhou was very pleased.
He asked Zhuge to sign a military order on the spot and entertained him with a banquet.
Zhuge said: “I cannot make it to the dinner today.
Counting three days from tomorrow, please send five hundred soldiers to the riverbank to transport arrows.”
Zhuge drank a few cups of wine and left.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lu Su said to Zhou Yu: “How can anyone produce one-hundred-thousand arrows in three days?
Zhuge Liang had to be fabricating the whole thing up, wouldn’t he?”
Zhou Yu said: “He said that all by himself and I didn’t coerce him.
I will order our military craftsmen to slow down working deliberately.
Also I will not provide the full range of arrow-making materials to him.
When he could not produce the arrows as he has undertaken to do, then he would have nothing to say when I pass verdict on him.
You go and find out what his plan is and report back to me.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lu Su met with Zhuge Liang.
Zhuge said: “To make one-hundred-thousand arrows in three days I need your help.”
Lu said: “You bring this upon yourself and how could I possibly help you?”
Zhuge said: “Loan me twenty boats with thirty soldiers in each boat.
The boats will be covered up entirely with green cloth curtains.
I also need one-thousand and then some straw bundles to be lined up on both sides of the boats.
I have an ingenious plan and on the third day I guarantee there will be one-hundred-thousand arrows.
But the Governor must not know about this, or else if he finds out my plan will not work.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lu Su promised to do as Zhuge Liang asked.
He did not know what Zhuge would do with the boats, and he returned to report to Zhou Yu.
Sure enough he did not mention the arrangement on borrowing boats and only said Zhuge did not use materials such as bamboo sticks, feathers, glue, and vanish.
Zhou was puzzled and said: “Let’s see what he would do when the third day comes.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lu Su privately put aside twenty speedy boats and assigned thirty soldiers to each boat.
Also he made such setups of green cloth curtains and straw bundles on the boats as requested by Zhuge and everything awaited further instructions from Zhuge.
第一天,不见诸葛亮有什么动静;
On the first day Zhuge did not make any move.
第二天,仍然不见诸葛亮有什么动静;
On the second day Zhuge also did nothing.
Around one to three o’clock after midnight on the third day Zhuge secretly asked Lu to come to one of the boats.
Lu asked him: “Why do you ask me to come here?”
Zhuge said: “I invite you to go and get the arrows with me together.”
Lu asked: “Where are we going to get them?”
Zhuge said: “There is no need to ask.
You will find out when you get there.”
Zhuge ordered to link the twenty boats together with ropes and sail them towards the northern shore.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At this time it was heavy fog everywhere and people facing each other could not see clearly the features of the opposite party.
Before the sky turned bright, the boats were close to the navy base of Cao Army.
Zhuge ordered the bows of the boats to face west and the sterns to face east in a line formation.
He also directed the soldiers on the boats to beat drums and shout at the top of their lungs.
Lu was shocked and said: “What if Cao soldiers come out, and then what are we going to do?”
Zhuge laughed and said: “The fog is so thick Cao Cao will not dispatch his soldiers to come out.
We just have to drink wine and enjoy ourselves.
At daybreak we will go back.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upon hearing the drumbeats and shouting, Cao Cao ordered: “The fog is very heavy in the river and the enemies have launched a surprise attack.
We can’t see clearly what is going on.
Let us don’t get out there impetuously.
We will only order our archers to shoot at them in preventing them from getting close.”
He transferred six thousand archers from the ground troop barracks to support the navy by the riverside.
Over ten-thousand archers shot arrows at the river together, and the arrow fell like raindrops.
Then Zhuge ordered the boats to turn around and face the bows eastward and the sterns westward.
As before the soldiers continued to beat drums and clamor.
Also the boats were sailed closer to catch the shooting arrow.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sky was getting bright gradually but fog had not dispersed.
At that time, straw bundles at both sides of the boats were stuck full of arrows.
Zhuge Liang ordered the soldiers on the boats to shout out loud: “Thank you Prime Minister Cao for the arrows.”
Then he ordered the boats to sail back to the southern shore.
Cao Cao realized he was tricked but those boats coming from his side were sailing downwind and down-current.
They already had twenty miles of head-start and it was impossible to catch up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the twenty boats went alongshore, the five hundred solders dispatched by Zhou Yu to pick up arrows at riverside came just in time.
Each boat had five to six thousand arrows and multiplied that by twenty boats totaled one-hundred-thousand and then some arrows.
Lu Su met Zhou Yu and told him the entire process in borrowing arrows.
Zhu took a deep sigh and said: “Zhuge Liang is meticulous and calculated.
Truly I am nowhere near his match.”

To Borrow Arrows with Thatched Boats

This is an episode from the Three Kingdoms. Zhou Yu ordered Zhuge Liang to manufacture 100,000 arrows within ten days. Zhuge said, “Give me three days.” He also signed a pledge placing himself liable for punishment should he fail to complete the order. Zhou Yu ridiculed that Zhuge Liang was looking for self-destruction. On the one hand, Zhou Yu ordered his troops not to provide Zhuge Liang with materials to make the arrows. He also sent Lu Su to spy on him to find out what was going on. In fact, Zhuge Liang had already realized that this was a plot by room, Zhuge said to Lu Su, “Save me please.” He asked Lu Su to lend him 20boats, each lined with straw-made scarecrows and manned by 30 soldiers. He requested that Lu Su not tell Zhou Yu what was happening.

When Lu Su came again to see Zhuge Liang, he did not find anything unusual. Nothing happened on the second day either. In the small hours of the third day, Zhuge Liang invited Lu Su for a boat ride. The 20 boats were tied together with strong ropes. Zhuge's fleet sailed toward the camp of Cao Cao. A thick mist had spread over the surface of the river. People could hardly see each other on the river. When Zhuge's fleet got close to the Cao camp before dawn, Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to shout and beat drums to fake an attack. Zhuge and Lu Su simply sat inside one of the boats and drank wines to enjoy themselves.

As soon as the Cao camp heard the shouting and drum beating, they mistook it for a surprise attack by the Zhou Yu camp. Since they could see nobody on the river, they gathered 3,000 bow men and ordered them to shoot arrows towards where the shouting and drum beating came. The front of the scarecrows was quickly shot full of arrows. After a while, Zhuge Liang had his fleet turned around to expose the other side of the scarecrows. When this side was also shot full of arrows, the day broke. Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to return to their base port. The soldiers shouted, “Thank you, Cao Cao, for your arrows.” After they got back to their camp, they collected more than 100,000 arrows from the scarecrows.
