仅供参考：我个人认为被修饰的成分如果能在从句中充当主语或者宾语的角色，该从句就是定于从句，如果被修饰的成分在从句中不能充当主语或者宾语的角色，该从句就是同位语从句。

定语从句限定范围，同位语从句说明内容。
the news he told me.(定语从句）
the news that our class won the game.（名词性从句）本回答被提问者采纳

很简单，举个例子你就知道了：
The news that Americans is attacking Iraq shocks us.
美国正在攻打伊拉克的新闻震惊了我们。
"the news"的内容就是“that American is attacking Iraq”, 两者指一个东西。
The news that he told us shoked us.
他告诉我们的那条新闻震惊了我们。
看不出"the news"的内容是什么。
