问一个英语单词的意思

It is for us, the living,
rather, to be dedicated here, to the unfinished work which they who fought here
have thus far so nobly(高贵的) advanced. 中间为什么用rather,而不是however?to be dedicated here,和后面的 一个to 是并列的吗?

把插入的部分 (the living, rather) 去掉,你会比较容易看清:

to be dedicated 是主句的谓语,而后面的 to 只是介词, the unfinished work.... 是宾语从句。追问

为什么不把rather换做 however,一般however都插入在句子中间的呀?

however 会起到语气转折的作用,甚至逆转前文的相反语义;这里用 rather 想表达的是近似 “更应该..." 的意思。

这样看:It is for us(the living, rather,) to be dedicated here to the unfinished work.
对于我们(活着的人)来说,应该献身于那些为完成的工作。
which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.做work的定语从句,修饰work,哪些工作呢?他们(谁呢?who fought here那些在此奋斗过的人们)曾经奋勇推动的未完成的工作。

however后面接一个句子。to be dediated here 和后面的一个to 不是并列。
