由于思维方式不同，英汉在主从句顺序排列上区别很大。汉语习惯上按事情发生的先后顺序来安排主从句的语序，先发生的先说，后发生的后说。即先有原因、条件、目的，后有结果。而英语则相反，原因状语从句、目的状语从句、条件状语从句、让步状语从句等等习惯性放在后面，表结果的主句通常要放在句首。before就是一个典型的例子，英美人特别爱使用连词before来引导句子，中国人读起来会感到有点别扭。其实多使用并能正确使用before从句可以让我们更好地掌握地道的英语。
1.把before译为“……才”：
例：①It will be a long time before we finish this dictionary.

2.把before译为“尚未”、“还没有”、“来不及”等：
例：①I’ll do it now before I forget it.

在他到达那里的时候天还没有下雨。
5.把before译为“等到”、“没等……就”、“直到”等：
例：①The crop will die before the rains fall.
等到天下雨，庄稼早就枯死了。
②However, before she could think twice, the water was upon her.
然而，没等她再考虑，水就到了她跟前。
③He left before I could explain it.
没等我解释，他就走了。
6.把before译为“免得”、“如果”、“否则”：
例：①You’d better do it well before you are dismissed.
你得好好干，免得被解雇。
②Go before I call the police.
走吧，否则我就叫警察了。
7.把before译为“然后”：
例：①Most things are difficult before they are easy.
万事开头难。
②I shaved before I went to the party.
我刮了脸，然后去参加宴会。
8.把before译为“必”或“再”：
例：①Pride goes before a fall.
骄者必败。
②Duty comes before pleasure.
先尽义务再谈享乐。

从诸上例句中，不难看出在翻译before从句时，一定要灵活理解before的意思，它的基本含义是“在……之前”，只不过要注意它的含义广、用法灵活。尽管before有着多种特殊译法，事实上它的含义其实与before的本义“在……之前”几乎相同，只是换了个词儿说罢了，以便更加符合汉语的表达习惯而已。
