spend sth. on doing sth.正确吗?

《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》（第六版）中有这句话，但我学校的老师们都说它不正确。

spend sth on doing sth.这句话和笼统。说错也行。一般用法是：
spend some money on sth/ on doing sth.(花钱）
spend some time on sth/ in doing sth.(花时间）
而且"on doing" and "in doing" in,on 都可以省略。
但是老师说错也不对！！！
