1、表示习惯的、永久性的或反复发生的动作（常用often，sometimes，usually，always，twice a month，every week，on sundays，occasionally，every so often，as a rule，rarely等状语连用）
例句：He seldom eats meat。

2、表示特征、能力或现时的情况或状态。
例句：He loves music。
他喜欢音乐。
3、表示普遍真理、事实，也用在格言中。
例句：The earth moves round the sun。
地球绕着太阳转。
4、在由when，if，after，before，although，as，as soon as，the minute，the next time，whether，even if，in case，though，till，until，wherever等引导的表示时间、条件、比较等状语从句中，用一般现在时代替一般将来时。
例句：I'll tell her when she comes tomorrow。
她明天来的时候我会告诉她的。
一般过去式的用法：
1、表示过去某个特定时间发生的动作或存在的状态。这种情况下常与“just now刚才，yesterday昨天，last year去年，in 1999在1999年，two days ago两天之前”等表示过去的时间状语连用。
例句：She suddenly fell ill yesterday。
她昨天突然病倒了。
2、一般过去时亦可与“today今天，this week这周，this month这个月，this year今年”等表示现阶段时间状语连用。
例句：Did you meet him today？
今天你看见他了吗？
3、表示过去的习惯性或经常发生的动作。
例句：I went to the cinema once a week when I was at school。
我上学时每周去看一场电影。
