定语从句中关于介词加关系代词的运用？

请问一般on+which 不是用来描述时间的么？
比如do you remember the day on which we met each other？
但是为什么下面的句子(和时间没有关系)也可以用on which？比如这样
the US economy is not the steam engine on which we depend.

谢谢，明白了，但是为什么有的可以拆(比如depend on 可以写成...on which we depend)但是look for就不能拆开呢(不能写成...for which i look) 请问哪些可以拆，哪些不可以拆呢 大神指教
