英语中介词连用的问题

比如这句话researchers believe smaller chips will allow the card to slim down to a more conventional size.
这里能不能省略down。英语中有很多双介词用法，是否有实际意义在其中，关键是平时自己表达时该如何使用？

1.首先要指出的是，这里的down是副词，不是介词。
2. slim愿意是指身材苗条的，形容词；使苗条或减肥，动词。这里做动词，衍生为使形状变小或缩小。本身就有“小”的意思，所以down可以省。相似的例子有：
cut the price=cut down the price。 减价，砍价
3.实际意义，当然是有的，使句子读起来连贯，也明确了动作或变化的方向。在本句中还不是很明显。我再举例子：
China will push the financial fiscal up to 825.8 billion yuan.
或者 China's financial fiscal will go up to 825.8 billion yuan .
中国的财政赤字将上升至...元人民币。你看在这里up就强调了变化的方向，没有它我们就无法看出赤字是上升还是下降。
4. 这种副词+介词连用其实蛮多的。你可以讲副词与动词看做整体，副词修饰动词。介词和名词是一个整体，不分开。
Please take the book out.
Please take the book out from the bag.
注意副词比较灵活，可以放在名词前：Please take out the book (from the bag).
5. 介词+介词短语很少很少，你只要记住一个from就好。在这里介词短语做名词用。
from+behind/above/inside...
The lake looks beautiful from above (the lake). 这里省掉the lake避免重复。
He walked from behind the door.
6. 上面提到介词短语做名词用，再举例：
The work is urgent. After supper is too late. 工作紧急，晚饭后太迟。after介词短语做名词，充当主语。

down作介词时，与up 相对，表示“沿着”，作用相当于along, 只不过有“由北向南”，或“由高往低”的意思在里面。如：Go down this street.
down 作介词用时，单独使用，V. +down to +名词，则这个down一定是副词。
双介词用法，主要在from, until 这几个词中，如：from behind the door, until after 5 o'clock.
还有in between, 其实into, onto 也是由两个介词合成而来的。
